Modern Tennis Methodology reminds me of the great story of the
Emperors’ New Clothes told by Hans Christian Andersen.
In this
story the King is sold a set of new clothes by a couple of unscrupulous rogues that is so fine and beautiful
that only intelligent and refined people can see it. He wears the clothes and because no one wants to appear
unrefined or dumb they all agree he is wearing a beautiful set of clothing.
So the
King goes out to meet the people in his new set of clothes and everyone agrees his new clothes are exquisite...
except for a young boy who sees the King as he truly is .... completely altogether
naked!
How does
this relate to tennis?
Well
imagine Oscar Wegner as that young boy. He played tennis at the highest level with some of
the all time greats of tennis like Rod Laver, Lou Hoad and Pancho Gonzales. When he quit the tour to start
teaching the game he loved, he found that tennis was coached differently from the way it was played at the
top.
Oscar
couldn’t believe it, as tennis was essentially an easy to game to play and learn but had been complicated
by the so called top coaches or tennis associations. He developed Modern Tennis Methodology to show how simple
the game can be and his phenomenal success proved he was right.
His
methodology is used in Spain, Argentina, Russia, Brazil, Serbia and all the top tennis nations where they seem
to create top players everyday...
World
No1s like Gustavo Kuerten, the Williams sisters to name but a few used these system to develop their
games...
YET even
today tennis associations and coaching organisations still insist on wearing the emperors’ new clothes and
ignore Oscars advice....
Just look at the British LTA who spend millions on trying to find the magic formula when it’s sitting right under
their noses .....
If you don't know the lovely story of the 'Emperors New Clothes'
then you can watch it right here....
