Modern Tennis trained girls chosen to play for Essex
Well done to Charisma Nuqui and Tia Magrath, pictured here, who were selected to represent Essex in the eight years and under girl’s team in March 2009. Charisma and Tia are both coached by MTI instructor, Andy Magrath. The actual event was a regional mini tennis county championship. It was great to see so many kids playing, especially the number of girls playing. The teams were; Essex Eagles, Bedfordshire Bulls, Buckinghamshire Broncos, Norfolk Knights, Cambridgeshire Cougars, Suffolk Sharks, Hertfordshire Hotshots and Northamptonshire Ninjas. The standard was very good and the matches were played in the right spirit. Tia Magrath aged 7 (left) who represented Essex Eagles, played in the girl’s mini red event. Tia played 7 singles matches. She won 4 and lost 3. Charisma Nuqui (right) aged 8 also represented Essex played in the mini orange event. Charisma played 2 singles matches. She won 1 and lost 1 and lost her doubles match. All the girls enjoyed themselves. There seemed to be a good team spirit amongst all the teams. Many thanks to the organizers at Gosling and the Odyssey Health for a very well run weekend.

Gloucester Glory for 2 Modern Tennis trained Juniors
Here's some amazing feedback sent to us late November, from a Level 3 and 4 Coach, Ioan Evans
"Both myself and Jonathan enjoyed the Level 4 course and found it very informative. I look forward to trying some of these new ideas learnt with my players over the coming months.
Two of my more promising players coming through the "Tennis Plus" programme, aged 10 and 13, have certainly benefited from the new methods of coaching I have adopted over the last 12 months following the Oscar Wegner techniques.
Both players are now ranked amongst the County's top players and both represent Gloucestershire in the County Cup Teams at their respective age groups. Only 18 months ago, neither boy featured inside the county top 10. I fully expect both boys to continue this rapid development and improvement in ranking."
How amazing is that?!! Well done boys!!!
We would love to hear your own Modern Tennis success stories, so please send them to us at team@playmoderntennis.com.
Thank you!
Tennis Coach UK Annual Conference
The TCUK (formerly the BTCA) held their annual conference at Bisham Abbey, National Sports Centre in November 2008. John and Andy were asked to give a brief demonstration of Oscar Wegner ’s Modern Tennis methodology that we teach on our courses. After John gave a brief outline of Modern Tennis history, Andy then took over by asking Jim Edgar (very important man in the TCUK!) to become our ‘guinea pig’ and be taken through some of the forehand progressions. Here he is hitting with John.
|
|
Andy then demonstrated how quickly you can teach a beginner to serve with spin. Even to the point that he kneeled and even laid down behind the baseline to emphasise that the serve is hit ‘up’ over the net. He hit the serve into the correct box! What a show boater!! As a result we had many new enquiries as to what we were all about, so welcome to all of you to MTI! Congratulations to Ian James from Llanelli who was the winner of our free prize draw and has won his very own copy of our Tennis in Minutes - Beginner to Improver DVD set worth £79! |
Modern Tennis International hits Cyprus!
One of our Modern Tennis International Levels 3 & 4 qualified Coaches -Nicholas Georgallides, is setting up an Academy in Cyprus in association with us here at Modern Tennis International! Nicholas asked that our chief instructors Andrew Magrath and John Littleford embark on a trip to Cyprus in September 08 to tutor coaches on how to implement Modern Tennis techniques into a Mini Tennis lesson. |
|
This course was especially designed by MTI for Nicholas's team, and it proved to be an tremendous success - even in the 35 degree heat! The course was truly an international affair. We had coaches from Cyprus, Russia, The Czech Republic, Sweden and Bulgaria. We also taught Tatyana Matokhnyuk who coached Nadia Petrova from a young age. |
|
Natasha from Bulgaria said: “This is pure gold! Why haven’t I heard of this before?! It answers so many questions I have had as both a player and as a coach!” Natasha is both ITF and PTR qualified. Her daughter Jo is highly ranked in Cyprus and plays ITF challenger events in Europe. |
|
All the coaches in Cyprus could not believe how easy tennis was to teach. As a result, Modern Tennis International now has a healthy and exciting new partnership with the Cyprus Academy and we look forward to visiting them again later this year!

Modern Tennis Junior Wins Thunderball Tournament
|
Modern Tennis trained youngster - Ashley Gray, won the fifteen and under category in the Thunderball tournament run at Deanes Tennis Academy, Essex. Ashley who is fifteen, and trained by Modern Tennis Director Andrew Magrath, stormed to victory in the weeklong event. The Leigh- on- Sea teenager even beat the boy who proved to be the eventual winner in the sixteen and under category! Many congratulations Ashley!

12 year old written off by own PE teacher CAN play Modern Tennis!
While on holiday in Italy in August 2008, John and Helen heard how their 12 year old nephew, Owen, had been told by his PE teacher that "When it comes to sport, Owen is a great musician". He was attempting to say, with humour (?!), that Owen didn’t have a natural ability to play sport – thus destroying Owen’s self confidence meaning he would probably always believe he was no good at sport. Well, the PE teacher was very wrong! |
|
|
John challenged Owen to try some Modern Tennis coaching. It was clear that the timing within the methodology which complimented Owen’s excellent musical timing capability – combined with his excellent ball sense (which the PE teacher suggested he didn't have), Owen was able to play tennis! Within 15 minutes of coaching – on a less than flat courtyard with a less than bouncy small football and a plastic bat, Owen hit a 25 shot rally with John!
|
MODERN TENNIS COACH IN NOTTINGHAM REQUIRED .... !!!
Owen’s mum, Tracey stared with amazement as her son played tennis – well !!! and they are now looking for a Modern Tennis trained coach near Nottingham – any volunteers?!?!?!
How did Modern Tennis help the players at Wimbledon this year?
Federer v Nadal
In the Mens Final at Wimbledon, we witnessed one of the truly remarkable matches of all time with the elegance of Federer and the awesome power of Nadal in the final of Wimbledon. The essence of Nadals game is spin and he has benefited from the legacy of Oscar Wegner’s teaching methods that have become the norm for Spain’s national coaching system. Oscar worked in Spain in the 70’s and had huge influence and success there. (And we all know how well Spain has done since then!
Our courses teach beginners to play with spin on every shot from day one!
Venus v Serena Williams
This was beyond doubt a fantastic match with the two most powerful athletes in women’s tennis displaying a truly breath-taking final. During the Final the commentator said “It’s so amazing that Richard Williams started these girls off with a book , a set of videos and nothing more!” Those videos and the book were Oscar Wegner’s - and our courses – which were designed with Oscar himself, brings those products to life!
Seven Year Old Charisma is an Absolute Star!
|
Andrew has been coaching Charisma Nuqui the Modern Tennis way, since Feb 2008 and Charisma has enjoyed a massive improvement in her game since she started learning Modern Tennis techniques. She has a natural talent and loves playing tennis. You can see Charisma playing on YouTube.com by clicking here. You can also watch her LIVE interview during Wimbledon 2008, on BBC Breakfast News where she was interviewed by Sports Presenter Chris Hollins on Number One Court at Wimbledon with Jo Durie - Former British Number One. Click here to see the BBC News interview on YouTube.com. Charisma has also enjoyed some local press publicity! You can read her report on the Thurrock Gazette website by clicking here. Charisma says "I just love getting out there and hitting the ball". Long may it continue we say!!! |
Charisma Demonstrating Modern Tennis
Here is Charisma showing beautifully how to hit a top spin backhand. Follow the pictures left to right, row by row, to see Charisma's entire shot frame by frame!
See how she's loading her body weight up her back foot and tracking the ball. As she brings the racquet forwards you will notice that although her body appears to be leaning back, she covers the ball nicely with her strings executing a fantastic top spin backhand, with a wonderful high finish.

In the summer of 2007, Andrew started coaching 4 year old Mika Stojanovic after her parents found the Oscar Wegner DVDs to be the best way forward for their daughter. They came to Modern Tennis to bring the DVDs to life.
Within 3 months of Modern Tennis coaching, Mika was showing pure brilliance on the tennis court. So much so that she, Andrew and John were interviewed by ITN on 21st December 2007 and BBC Breakfast - which was live 3 times during a cold morning in January 2008! These photos were taken of the ITN interview.
News articles also appeared on Setanta News and in the Mail on Sunday at Christmas 2007. With her father coming from Montenigro, Mika's Modern Tennis story made it all over the international papers and magazines across Europe!
